Pension plan underfunding, PBGC 'deficit' artificially inflated by historically low interest rates
Long-term policy should not be dictated by temporary economic conditions"Much of the crisis facing employee pension plans today has to do with historically low interest rates that are artificially overstating pension plan liabilities and the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation's (PBGC) reported deficit," American Benefits Council President James A. Klein said this morning in conjunction with a congressional hearing to discuss defined benefit pension plans and the PBGC. "Anytime you evaluate a long-term obligation like a pension, with a snapshot point in time you will get a skewed and very misleading picture — either positively or negatively," Klein said.

Council Files Amicus Brief in U.S. Supreme Court PPACA Case
"If the Supreme Court rules that the individual mandate is unconstitutional, then the 'shared responsibility' provision of the law requiring employers to offer health coverage that satisfies the individual mandate should also be struck down," according to an amicus (friend of the court) brief filed today by the American Benefits Council.
